Using Nova Scotia earthenware clay, she produces wheel-thrown and assembled slip-ware informed by ceramics history, natural phenomena and ornament. Her sensuous shapes and patterned surfaces invite contemplation and inspire use.

In 1995, Joan began her teaching career at NSCAD University and established her Lunenburg studio/storefront, Nova Terra Cotta Pottery, operating until 2022. She was Assistant Professor at Emily Carr  Institute of Art  from 1998 - 2002 and Regular Part Time Ceramics Faculty at NSCAD University from 1995-2019.
